Chief executive-elect John Lee Ka-chiu meets with Prof. Lionel M. Ni

On the morning of June 6, a delegation headed by Prof. Lionel M. Ni, president-designate of HKUST (GZ), visited the chief executive-elect Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu at the Office of the Chief Executive-elect of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Prof. Lionel M. Ni congratulated Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu on his election win and appointment by the central government as the sixth-term chief executive of the HKSAR.

Prof. Lionel M. Ni briefed the new chief executive on the basic situation and current progress of the establishment of HKUST (GZ) and also thanked the HKSAR government and chief executives for their constant support. On December 21, 2018, the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality, Guangzhou University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) officially signed a cooperation agreement on the joint establishment of HKUST (GZ). On September 19, 2019, HKUST (GZ) was officially approved for establishment by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, making it the first Mainland-Hong Kong cooperatively-run school since the implementation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. With the support of the central and local governments, HKUST (GZ) is marching towards its official opening in September 2022. On behalf of HKUST (GZ) and all sides involved in the cooperation, Prof. Lionel M. Ni invited Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu and other representatives of the HKSAR government to attend the opening ceremony of HKUST (GZ).

Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu inquired in detail about HKUST (GZ)’s educational paradigm, discipline setting, enrollment scale, faculty resources, and research cooperation, and highly recognized the collaboration mechanism of Unified HKUST and Complementary Campuses. Meanwhile, Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu and Prof. Lionel M. Ni exchanged views on some important issues.

Mr. Chu Chi-ho, assistant private secretary to the chief executive-elect, and Dr. Bin Li, special assistant to the president of HKUST (GZ) and director of the President’s Office of HKUST (GZ), also attended the meeting.
