Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education, attends and delivers a speech at the first commencement ceremony of HKUST (GZ)

On September 1, the first commencement ceremony of HKUST(GZ) was held in Nansha District, Guangzhou. Communist Party Secretary of Guangdong Province Mr. Li Xi attended the event. Vice-chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Mr. Leung Chun-ying and HKSAR Chief Executive Mr. John LEE Ka-Chiu spoke on screen at the event. Minister of Education Dr. Huai Jinpeng and Governor of Guangdong Province Mr. Wang Weizhong attended and delivered speeches at the ceremony.
Huai Jinpeng stated in his speech that, since the 18th Party Congress, the Party Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, taking into account both the domestic and international imperatives, promotes the great practice of “one country, two systems” from the overall perspective of achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, develops a new blueprint for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and leads Hong Kong and Macao to further integrate into the overall development of the country. In the course of national development, education highly honors its missions by striving to nurture the most profound, long-lasting and strong force to go ahead. The Ministry of Education concentrates its efforts to build a highland of education openness in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and promotes richer, deeper and more vibrant educational communication and exchanges between Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. The establishment of cooperatively-run universities between the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong has played an active role in diversifying the supply of quality educational resources, deepening higher education reform and nurturing innovative talent. This is a practice of “One Country, Two Systems” and reflects how education serves the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and national construction.
Huai Jinpeng pointed out that in face of changes unseen in a century, a global pandemic, and opportunities and challenges brought by a new round of science and technology revolution and industry upgrading, we will navigate the new era and look to the future. We will also achieve sharing of quality educational resources, promote the ecological transformation of education through educational digitalization, serve all-round development of mankind by virtue of educational development, and expedite the development of a world-class modern education system with Chinese characteristics.
Huai Jingpeng shared his three hopes for the construction of university, teachers and students:
First, HKUST(GZ) should pursue building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics as its target, sticks to the right education direction, and fulfill the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education. Deeply rooted in the rich soil of patriotic talent, HKUST(GZ) should serve as a wisdom driver for science and technology innovation in the Great Bay Area, build bridges and channels for communication of youth between the mainland and Hong Kong, and strive to set a benchmark and paradigm of China-based collaborative university in the new era facilitating the integration of Hong Kong and Guangdong with a global look.
Thirdly, students should cherish a beautiful lifetime, work hard and stay hungry for knowledge. Students should also build up noble personalities, develop competent skills and become high-quality talents full of patriotism and global vision.
HKUST(GZ) was formally established with the approval of the Ministry of Education on June 14, 2022. Jointly sponsored by Guangzhou University and HKUST, HKUST(GZ) offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, with the first batch of nearly 600 students enrolled in 2022.
