HKUST(GZ)to be awarded the first Guangdong Science and Technology Award!

On February 5, the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department announced on its official website the proposed awards for the 2022 Guangdong Science and Technology Awards, including 26 natural science awards (8 first-class awards, 18 second-class awards), 16 technological invention awards (7 first-class awards, 9 second-class awards), 133 science and technology progress awards (2 special awards, 34 first-class awards, 97 second-class awards), 24 youth science and technology innovation awards, and 16 Science and Technology Achievement Promotion Awards. Wu Kaishun, Associate Vice President (Research) and Professor of Data Science and Analytics/Internet of Things, was awarded the 2022 Guangdong Science and Technology Award - Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, and the formal announcement has been released.

Introduction of Guangdong Science and Technology Award

The Guangdong Science and Technology Award is established by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government and is mainly awarded to individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of scientific and technological progress and economic and social development, which is the highest honor of Guangdong Province in terms of rewarding scientific and technological achievements. Guangdong Science and Technology Prize, which is reviewed once a year and has seven categories, is a significant initiative to encourage autonomous innovation and inspire the creative vitality of talents. The Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award and the Science and Technology Achievement Promotion Award, two new honors added as a result of the "Guangdong Science and Technology Reward Measures" revision last year, will be given out for the first time this year. The proposed Guangdong Science and Technology Award - Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award is a major breakthrough in the cultivation of scientific research talents in our university since its establishment and will play a positive role in promoting the improvement of our scientific research level as well as the cultivation of innovative talents. It is also the first Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award to be approved in Nansha since the promulgation of the “Nansha Plan”.

Wu Kaishun, Associate Vice President (Research) of HKUST (GZ), Professor of Data Science and Analytics and Internet of Things at the Information Hub, IEEE/IET/AAIA Fellow, Special Allowance Expert of the State Council, Selected as National Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Project, National Young Specialists, New Century Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education, Specially Appointed Professor of Pearl River Scholars of Guangdong Province, Leading Talents of Science and Technology Innovation of Guangdong Province, etc. In recent years, he has published more than 200 papers in major international academic journals and conferences and granted more than 100 invention patents in China and abroad. In the pioneering area of ubiquitous wireless intelligent perception, his research work has been ranked first in the world in terms of citation frequency among all papers on the topic of device-free perception in Google Scholar, Microsoft Scholar, and IEEE Explore in the past 10 years. He has been ranked No. 1 in Microsoft Scholar Top Authors for the past 10 years. His research results were awarded the first prize (ranked 1) in the Guangdong Science and Technology Award (Natural Science) in 2014 and the second prize (ranked 1) in the Guangdong Science and Technology Award (Technological Invention) in 2016.
