Receiving the admission letter means you're a member of HKUST(GZ)!

On July 15th, Prof. Lionel M. NI, the President of HKUST(GZ), issued undergraduate admission letters to 7 students from Guangdong and Hong Kong, who would embark on a new chapter of their life in the coming future. Such meaningful ceremony added color to HKUST(GZ)'s first year of undergraduate enrollment.

President's words:

Choosing HKUST(GZ) is to keep pace with the development of advanced technologies in the world!

At 10:30 am, the admission letter presentation ceremony officially began. At the ceremony, Prof. Lionel M. NI warmly welcomed the arrival of the first batch of undergraduate students, "As an international innovative university, we have always been anticipating outstanding students with the potential to innovate. Now we finally got our first batch of undergraduates!" Prof. Lionel M. NI emphasized that for the first batch of students, the university will gather the best resources and provide innovative education. "The doors of the professors are always open to you, and the equipment of the school is all built for you." He also said to the new students that choosing HKUST (GZ) is to keep pace with the development of advanced technologies in the world, and hoped that everyone could cherish the present, seize the future, unleash creativity, surpass themselves, shoulder the mission of introducing scientific and technological innovation for the country and become the pioneers of the world's technological revolution.

As the school song played, 7 new students took turns to receive their admission letters. Zhang Sida from High School Affiliated Guangzhou University received the first undergraduate admission letter from HKUST(GZ), and Ou Yunxi from Shimen Middle School in Foshan became the first Hong Kong undergraduate admitted to HKUST(GZ).

After the admission letters had been delivered, Prof. Lionel M. NI and the new students had a free question-and-answer session, pushing the atmosphere to a climax.

What difficulties did you encounter when founding the school? What suggestions do you have for interdisciplinary studies? How can students' voices be conveyed to the management? Prof. Lionel M. NI patiently answered questions from the new students one by one. Regarding the development of student clubs, Prof. Lionel M. NI said that in addition to learning their majors, students should also focus on strengthening their abilities in all aspects. Joining clubs can effectively cultivate students' leadership and communication skills, and the university will provide full support.

Academic and administrative leaders and faculty members from various departments of HKUST(GZ) were also present at the ceremony, warmly welcoming new students and their parents. Prof. Hui XIONG,the Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer), Prof. Ricky Shi-Wei LEE, the Dean of Systems Hub, Prof. Kai TANG, the Head of Thrust of Smart Manufacturing, Prof. Jun XIA of Thrust of Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering, and Prof. Jiang XU, Head of Thrust of Microelectronics, exchanged contact information with new students and their families, and discussed their future studies and lives.

Dr. Bin LI, the Special Assistant to the President and the Director of Office of the President, and Ms. Guimei LI, the Director of Office of Administrative Resources introduced that the school's infrastructure, smart campus, and supporting services will create a technology-rich and user-friendly environment for all new students. In the undergraduate enrollment process of HKUST(GZ), Office of Student Affairs coordinated faculty from many departments of the university and postgraduates to serve as enrollment volunteers which help promote and introduce the school. At today's event, enrollment volunteers met again with the new students they had recruited and had a pleasant conversation.

New Student Voices:

Growing Together with a Young School

Receiving the admission letter from their desired university, the new students were excited, eagerly anticipating the new chapter in their life. "I am very happy and excited to receive the admission letter today. I already feel a sense of responsibility," said Xu Hua, a student from Shimen Middle School in Nanhai District, Foshan. It is exciting to be admitted into the desired university, but being the first batch of undergraduates and growing with a young univeristy also mean heavy responsibilities. When asked why she chose HKUST(GZ), Ou Yunxi a student from Hong Kong said that it was because of its innovative staged training mode. In the first two years of undergraduate study, students can explore their interests freely, and then choose their majors in the third year.

HKUST(GZ) admitted 125 undergraduates in Guangdong, Sichuan, Henan, and Shandong provinces in Mainland China this year, all of whom were science students (or having physics as elective subject) and were admitted based on their college entrance exam scores in the early admissions phase without comprehensive evaluation. The school also admitted 12 students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and 3 international students. It is worth emphasizing that HKUST (GZ) set up the PhD Integrated Class in its first year of undergraduate enrollment, providing the best educational resources and academic guarantees for outstanding students who are interested in engaging in cutting-edge scientific research and technological innovation through the combined undergraduate and graduate program. This year, the PhD Integrated Class recruited 25 students in total, and there were high-scoring students from all four provinces, with the highest score reaching 678 in Guangdong, 681 in Sichuan, 680 in Shandong, and 678 in Henan.

Technology Elements Run Through:

Campus Ambassadors Lead the Way, Gift Boxes Bear Surprises

Today, the "campus ambassador" robot led the new students to the main venue, instead of faculty and staff. As the first university in China to fully use GPT services on campus, HKUST(GZ) used the GPT and real data generated during campus operations to train the "campus ambassador" robot, making it a "encyclopedia" of the campus and providing strong support for school enrollment and campus life services. In addition to the "campus ambassador" robot, technology elements can also be seen on the admission letter gift box.

Named "First Encounter," the admission letter gift box not only signifies the encounter between the university and the first batch of undergraduates, but also represents HKUST(GZ)'s debut in the undergraduate enrollment. The box is in HKUST's brand colors, HKUST blue and HKUST gold, which are classic and solemn. Opening the gift box, you will see a miniature campus landscape composed of Hongniao Square and the administrative building. The admission letter has a chip-like appearance, echoing the university's scientific and technological innovation genes.

AR content is a special design in the gift box. Students only need to scan the code using their phones to see a series of milestone events at HKUST(GZ), including the admission of the first branch of undergraduates. In addition, students can also link to the campus's mini-program to access AR campus navigation, library borrowing, sports reservations and other functions, which enables students to easily start their intelligent campus life. The admission letter ceremony for the first batch of undergraduate students at HKUST (GZ) has successfully ended. More admission letters will be sent through EMS from today, and we are looking forward to welcoming all new students.
