HKUST(GZ) Campus Project Has Won International Architecture Award!

On August 10th, according to Beijing time, the International Architecture Awards 2023 winners were announced by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, The European Center for Architecture Art Design, and Urban Studies, and Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd. The HKUST (GZ) campus project, designed and submitted by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), has been honored with this prestigious award.

As a highly influential international architecture award, the International Architecture Awards (IAA) serve as a reflection of the global progress and evolving trends in architectural craftsmanship. The IAA not only guides the latest developments in design practices at the forefront of the architectural field but also aims to recognize outstanding achievements in architecture and urbanization from a global standpoint.

The master plan and design of the HKUST (GZ) campus aim to achieve a seamless integration of natural landscape and architecture. The campus design incorporates key advanced technologies in energy conservation and environmental protection, aimed at creating a green, intelligent, and sustainable development new benchmark.

The holistic campus design embraces the concept of a neighborhood community, with all specialized facilities converging around a central area to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and establish a closely-knit community model, promoting seamless connections.

The administrative building, with its commanding view of the entrance courtyard and the Red Bird Sundial sculpture, symbolizes growth and innovation, serving as the gateway to the research campus.

The academic research area is located at the core of the campus, with eight research and laboratory buildings interconnected by a covered strip arcade. This design encourages interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, fostering a vibrant campus atmosphere.

Connecting the east and west campuses through the canal, the library takes center stage as the central hub. The study spaces on the higher floors provide the best panoramic views of the campus, while avoiding potential noise disturbances that may occur at ground level.

The campus activity center serves as a link between the central campus and the dormitories, creating a dynamic urban space that harmoniously blends humanistic and natural elements within its architecture. It plays a vital role in forming the green belt of the campus.

Taking inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape, the sports hall is seamlessly integrated with the adjacent river. With a wide range of sporting facilities, it encourages students and staff members to actively participate in physical activities, creating a healthy campus community environment.

The dormitory area is designed with a convenient commercial street, blurring the line between the campus and the city. It serves as a social center for students, catering to their diverse needs to the maximum extent.

The waterways within the campus maintain the distinctive features of the Lingnan region's water systems, forming a vital link for the expansion and development along the campus axis. They connect multiple functional areas of the campus and serve as primary channels guiding access to different destinations.

According to reports, the HKUST(GZ) campus project has been the recipient of numerous international architecture awards. On March 16, 2023, the HKUST(GZ) campus project won the Best Cultural, Sports, and Education Project award at the 2023 MIPIM Awards. On July 8th, HKUST(GZ) campus project was awarded the Gold Award in the "Social Public Project – Cultural & Education" category of the CREDAWARD.

The International Architecture Awards (IAA), announced this time, were organized in 2004 by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd. The awards are dedicated to the evaluation and recognition of exceptional and impactful architectural, landscape design, interior design, and urban planning projects on a global scale. They actively seek to discover and celebrate the innovative progress achieved in the field of design.
