HKUST(GZ) will conduct the 2024/25 Fall Red Bird MPhil Program Offline Interview from 3rd to 4th . Offline Interview is an essential part of postgraduate selection process for HKUST(GZ), which aims to practice the cross-disciplinary, project-based, innovative talent cultivation model, fully tap the potential of applicants, and select applicants with excellent academic performance and comprehensive abilities for admission. 

Red Bird MPhil Program Offline Interview consists of two parts: the first is a group project activity that evaluates applicants' comprehensive qualities and abilities, such as teamwork and communication skills; the second is an individual interview identical to previous online interviews, which evaluates applicants' academic accomplishments.

Activity Introduction

Each group of 4-6 students is required to build a Domino Machine (Rube Goldberg Machine) within the time limit by using the basic materials provided (wooden board, wooden stick, dominoes, spring, cotton thread, golf ball, etc.). The machine should trigger the machine of next group, and the machine of last group should trigger the designated mechanical switch.

Activity Procedure

1. Random allocation and Material Collection:

After registering at the sign-in desk, students should wait in the waiting area until the system randomly assigns and announces their groups. They should then take their seats at the assigned tables and check their materials list. (Communication between groups is not allowed before the production phase begins).

2. Machine Production:

Each group will have 120 minutes to create their machine and can test it multiple times and discuss with other groups within the time limit.

3. Machine Testing:

After the 120-minute production period, all groups are required to stop production and test the operation of their machine to trigger the machine of next group within 30 minutes. Final test score will be recorded by the judges.

4. Personal Statements and Group Peer Evaluation:

After testing their machines, students should conduct personal statements and group peer evaluations(20mins).

Notes

1. The ground projection area of the machine must not exceed the size of the table(1*1.8m).

2. Only the machine of the first group is allowed to be triggered manually. The machine of subsequent group need to be triggered by the machine of previous group.

3. The first group can propose a requirement for the position or triggering conditions of mechanical switches.

4. The machine of first group needs to be manually triggered, and the last group can propose a requirement for the triggering position or conditions, etc.

5. Each device needs to include 4 or more segments and 2 or more moving objects.

6. At least one segment of the machine needs to make the moving object move upwards.

7. This activity takes place exclusively in Highbay, and all production must occur within the designated area.

8. Groups should only use materials provided by the activity organizers, and teams are allowed to communicate with each other and exchange materials & tools.

9. The design of creative elements for devices beyond the device itself are encouraged (such as storylines, aesthetic design, etc.)

10. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) holds the final interpretation rights for all rules.
