Leaders of HKUST(GZ) personally visit 10 high schools in 3 cities to issue the 1st batch of undergraduate admission letters
On July 18, 31 outstanding students from 6 high schools in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, accompanied by their parents, received the 1st batch of undergraduate admission letters from President Professor Lionel M. Ni and Secretary Professor Shaobing Qu. The smiles on the students' facesshowcased their anticipation for their future life at HKUST(GZ).
In 2024, HKUST(GZ) admitted 300 undergraduate students in the early admission round from 11 provinces and direct-controlled municipalities nationwide through the national college entrance examination (Gaokao). The overall admission results reached the level of C9 League universities, including 25 outstanding students who received gold, silver, and bronze medals in the five major Olympiads and provincial first prizes. This year, HKUST(GZ) enrolled 124 students in Guangdong province, a significant increase from 55 students in 2023. The highest score recorded in Guangdong province was 678.
In addition, HKUST(GZ) admitted 20 exceptional students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan in 2024 through the national joint admissions, Macau's recommended students program, and Taiwan's "GSAT" exams. Notably, HKUST(GZ) is the first among the four Hong Kong-mainland joint universities to enroll students recommended from Macau.
Regarding the admission of students from Hong Kong, this year HKUST(GZ) introduced a new method by utilizing the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams in addition to the traditional national joint admissions process for overseas Chinese and students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Currently, HKUST(GZ) has already admitted some outstanding students from Hong Kong through the national joint admissions and will formally commence the DSE exam admissions process on July 22.
HKUST(GZ) issued the first batch of undergraduate admission letters over two days this year. On July 17, President Lionel M. Ni led a delegation to Pui Ching Middle School, Hou Kong Middle School, and Keang Pang School in Macau, presenting the first batch of undergraduate admission letters to 5 outstanding students. On the 18th, President Lionel M. Ni and Secretary Shaobing Qu led delegations to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, where a total of 31 students received the first batch of undergraduate admission letters. On the 18th, amidst warm congratulations to this year's first group of undergraduate admission recipients, President Ni and Secretary Qu also shared words of encouragement with the new students.
President Lionel M. Ni stated that HKUST(GZ) is not merely a replica of HKUST; rather, it aims to establish a brand-new school based on the successful experiences of HKUST and undertake tasks that were previously contemplated but not yet realized in response to national needs. HKUST(GZ) places students at the core, advocates for an exploration-oriented active learning model, and assists students in devising innovative solutions. President Ni emphasized that university education is a critical phase in the transition from childhood to adulthood, highlighting that education at HKUST(GZ) is not just about imparting knowledge but more significantly about nurturing capabilities and qualities.
On that day, Secretary Shaobing Qu also made three reassuring promises to high school leaders, admitted students, and parents: "Parents, rest assured, we will surely return to you even more outstanding children; High schools, rest assured, as we take on the baton from you, we will certainly return even more outstanding alumni to you; New undergraduate students, rest assured, your future studies at HKUST(GZ) will definitely help you achieve a more outstanding version of yourself."
Dr. Yong Zhen, the President's Assistant and overall head of undergraduate admissions, provided new students with a detailed introduction to the strong faculty resources, abundant international resources, and world-class laboratories at HKUST(GZ). Dr. Zhen expressed that the development of new productive forces relies on cultivating "new quality" talents, stating that "HKUST(GZ) will spare no effort in nurturing future-oriented talents in scientific and technological innovation."
On the 18th, President Ni visited High School Affiliated of Guangzhou University, Guangdong Experimental High School, Zhixin High School, and Guangzhou No.2 High School to present admission letters.
On the same day, Professor Shaobing Qu, the Secretary of HKUST(GZ), and Dr. Yong Zhen, the President's Assistant and overall head of undergraduate admissions, visited Shenzhen Senior High School and Shenzhen Middle School to present admission letters.
With the issuance of the first batch of undergraduate admission letters, the students admitted to HKUST(GZ) this year will also gradually receive this heartfelt gift.
