2024 HKUST(GZ) Talents Carnival & The 1st Fusion·Innovation·Envision International Interdisciplinary Forum will be held in November. The event will take the form of a carnival to build a platform for global academic talents to interact and exchange ideas, to showcase the academic innovation and vigor of young talents, and to demonstrate the unique interdisciplinary academic structure of the HKUST(GZ) and its mission to lead the change of the mode of higher education.

The forum announcement will be released soon. Outstanding young scholars from China and abroad who are interested in participating in the forum please register through the registration link: https://talentsforum.hkust-gz.edu.cn/ , or scan the QR code below:

HKUST(GZ) warmly invite young talents from all over the world to participate in the event, explore the academic frontiers and join hands in innovation and development. Please follow the forum’s official website and the university’s WeChat official account for more information.

HKUST(GZ) is in Nansha District, the geometric center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a national level new area and talent special zone. The campus covers an area of approximately 1669 mu, with construction schedule divided into two phases. The total floor area of the first phase is 636,000 square meters and is in use since 2022, construction of the second phase, with a total floor area of 730,000 square meters, will start soon. Following international standards and inheriting the concept of a sustainable and intelligent campus from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), it aims to create a green and intelligent campus where nature and architecture harmoniously coexist.

The campus is adjacent to the Qingsheng station of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway. It takes only 40 minutes to reach the Qingsheng station from the West Kowloon high-speed railway station in Hong Kong, facilitating meaningful cooperation between the two campuses.

Under the “UNIFIED HKUST, COMPLEMENTARY CAMPUSES” framework, HKUST(GZ) and HKUST are separate legal entities with their own financial systems, but both maintain consistency in high academic standards on faculty and program quality, while creating great synergy by sharing resources and complementing each other’s strengths.

HKUST(GZ) substitutes the conventional “school-based” academic structure with a unique “Hubs” and “Thrusts” framework. This unprecedented academic configuration in global higher education will facilitate cross-disciplinary education and research endeavors, especially in emerging and frontier disciplines. While holding steady the structure of 4 “Hubs”, HKUST(GZ) ensures that its “Thrusts” remain vigilant to the need for flexibility and adaptability, bracing themselves for the increasingly complex challenges of a rapidly-changing world.

HKUST(GZ) has established Function Hub, Information Hub, Systems Hub, and Social Hub with 16 thrusts.

Academic Structure

HKUST(GZ) operates under the supervision of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, and offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. The university currently has nearly 3,000 students, with future enrollment expected to reach approximately 10,000, including 4,000 undergraduates and 6,000 postgraduates.

HKUST(GZ) adheres to a "student-centered" approach and continuously explores new models for talent cultivation with interdiscipline. At the undergraduate level, the university promotes a broad-brush undergraduate education system, adopts a residential college system, offers modularized courses, and provides articulation of undergraduate education with doctoral programs. For postgraduate students, the university has launched the Red Bird MPhil Program and applies a model based on three concepts: student-centered, interdisciplinary and project-based. Students receive personalized guidance from academic mentors across different Thrusts, project supervisors from the Red Bird MPhil Program, and industry mentors from renowned enterprises. By taking on specific roles within team projects, they conduct research for their master’s thesis and progressively learn to shape their individual career paths. The program's goal is to cultivate top talents and future leaders in both academia and industry.

To enhance students' practical skills, the university has established the Red Bird Maker Space (RBMS), offering state-of-the-art facilities, including Machining and Fabrication Workshop, Carpentry and 3D Modeling Workshop, Precision Manufacturing and Measurement Lab, Materials Preparation Lab, Electronic and Electrical Lab. These resources provide a solid foundation for students' development in innovation and entrepreneurship.

RBMS
Workshops

As of September 2024, HKUST(GZ) currently has over 300 academic personnel, including more than 240 tenure-track faculty members. 100% of them hold doctoral degrees, 98% have overseas educational backgrounds or work experience, 20% have won national talent projects over the last 2 years, nearly 50% have been rewarded by provincial and ministerial level talent schemes, and 15% have been listed among World's Top 2% Scientists.

The central research facilities of HKUST(GZ) and HKUST are shared by students and faculty members of both campuses, with a construction plan that ensures the non-repetition of large-scale equipment between the two campuses, while also being open to other universities and industry. The central research facilities create favorable conditions for the research and cooperation of both campuses and provide support for the strengthening of Enterprise-University-Research Institute cooperation in the Greater Bay Area and even globally. Currently, HKUST(GZ) has a total of 15 central labs and has established 25 theme-based labs. Many of these labs are globally competitive.
