HKUST(GZ) Launches First Batch of UG Students Exchange and Study Abroad Programs

On December 19th, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) held a launch event for its UG Students Exchange and Study Abroad Programs, unveiling the first series of partnerships with universities in countries including the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Belgium. This initiative signifies that HKUST(GZ) undergraduates could have the opportunity to study at prestigious international universities as early as the fall of 2025.

Professor Lionel M. NI, President of HKUST(GZ), attended the launch event and delivered a speech. Other notable attendees included Professor Ricky Shi-Wei LEE, Dean of the Systems Hub; Dr. Kevin ZHEN, Assistant to the President and Dean of the Office of Student Affairs; Ms. Biru LIANG, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; Mr. Philip YEUNG, Advisor to the President; Dr. Yingbo LIU, Assistant to the President for Administration and Head of the Department of Academic Governance and Senate; and Dr. Li XIN, Deputy Head of Department of Residential College Administration. The event was hosted by Mr. Jing FU, Head of the Global Affairs Dpartment.

In his speech, President NI emphasized that The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) is dedicated to becoming a world-class international research university, with a focus on technological innovation. He encouraged students at HKUST(GZ) to remain connected to China while adopting a global outlook, to seize opportunities for international exploration, carefully plan their university experience, and enrich their research and academic journeys. By engaging in exchange programs, students can develop into global citizens and contribute knowledge towards a better world.

Today, our university unveiled undergraduate overseas exchange program destinations in seven countries: Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, South Korea, Japan, and the United States. Partner institutions include prestigious universities such as Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, Seoul National University, RWTH Aachen University, and KU Leuven. President NI noted that the announcement of these initial programs signifies the ongoing fruition of our university's intensive international exchange efforts in 2024. In 2025, the university plans to announce additional exchange programs, further extending our list of collaborations and expanding our network of partners.

At the launch event, Ms. Siyuan ZHAO, Representative for Europe and Africa Affairs; Ms. Minting ZHAO, Representative for Asia-Pacific Affairs; and Ms. Zhen CAI, Representative for the Americas, each provided an overview of the overseas exchange programs available in their respective regions. Ms. Fui Peng Aw Yeong from the Cross-Campus Study Coordination Team outlined the overall application process for these exchange programs. Ms. Leona LI from the Department of Academic Registry Service explained the rules and procedures for credit transfer associated with these programs.

Furthermore, Ms. Jessie JIANG from the Cross-Campus Study Coordination Team introduced the HKUST Summer Exchange Program. This initiative is a sub-project of the "Redbird Cross-Campus Learning Initiative," jointly launched by our university and HKUST. It seeks to facilitate resource sharing and leverage complementary strengths through mechanisms such as course sharing and mutual credit transfer and recognition, within the framework of "Unified HKUST-Complementary Campuses."

During the Q&A session of the event, students expressed a strong desire to participate in the newly announced programs. They engaged actively with President NI and the faculty, showing enthusiasm for the opportunity to study and live abroad, improve their language skills, and experience diverse cultures.
