HKUST(GZ) Forges Academic Ties in North America with Signing Collaboration Agreement with the University of British Columbia
From January 6 to 14, a delegation led by Professor Ting Chuen Pong, Vice-President (Administration & Business) from HKUST(GZ), visited Canada and the United States. The mission aimed to establish partnerships with top-tier universities, promote interdisciplinary research, and expand opportunities for academic exchanges and student mobility.
During their stay in Vancouver on January 6 and 7, the delegation engaged with local academic institutions. Professors Hin Kwok Tsang, Liuqing Yang, and Gerald Z Lan from HKUST(GZ) participated in the engagements.
On January 6, Professor Pong, on behalf of HKUST(GZ), signed a collaboration agreement with Cheryl Dumaresq, the Executive Director of Global Engagement at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Both sides expressed commitment to leveraging their strengths and enhancing resource sharing to provide students with enriched learning experiences.

Later that day, the delegation met with Consul General Shu Yang at the Chinese Consulate in Vancouver. Consul General Yang praised the university's educational philosophy. He expected HKUST(GZ) to play an active role in furthering educational exchanges between Chinese and Canadian institutions.

On January 7, the delegation visited Simon Fraser University. The parties reached a consensus on enhancing cooperation student exchange and collaborations in applied sciences and sustainability and agreed on swift implementation. Professor Eugene Fiume, Dean of Applied Sciences and Lindsay Bunce, Director of Sustainability and Climate, agreed with the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration to address global sustainability challenges and committed to developing talent with international perspectives and innovative capabilities.

In Vancouver, the delegation hosted a Global Talent Fair to invite outstanding academics to join HKUST(GZ) in advancing its educational and research missions. More than 50 PhD and postdoctoral scholars from Canadian universities, including UBC and the University of Alberta were attracted to the event.
