HKUST(GZ) President Meets with UK and Japan Delegations
On January 17, Professor Lionel M. Ni, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), met with Mr. Chris Jones, Director of Technology and Analysis from Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office, and Mr. Nicholas Duviver, Deputy Consul General of the British Consulate General in Guangzhou. He also welcomed a delegation of Japanese entrepreneurs led by Ms. Yoshiko Kijima, Consul General of Japan in Guangzhou.

UK Delegation Visit and Discussions
Professor Ni illustrated the university’s innovative educational philosophy, interdisciplinary academic structure, and international cooperation strategies. Joining the meetings were also Professor Yang Yang, Associate Vice-President (Teaching & Learning), Mr. Jing Fu, Head of Global Affairs Department, and others across various academic domains.
The UK delegation toured the Visitor Information Center, Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility (GZ), and Computational Media Arts Laboratory, engaging in technical exchanges. A closed-door meeting followed where both sides discussed potential collaborations, particularly in joint research and student mobility.

Official Visit of Japanese Business Leaders to HKUST(GZ)
Consul General Yoshiko Kijima recently led a delegation of prominent Japanese business leaders to HKUST(GZ) as part of the 2025 Guangzhou-Japan Economic and Trade Cooperation Roundtable Dialogue. This initiative was organized by the Guangzhou Municipal Commerce Bureau in collaboration with the Consulate-General of Japan in Guangzhou, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Guangzhou, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Guangzhou Office, with support from Nansha District.
The dialogue aimed to strengthen economic ties between Japan and Guangzhou, featuring presentations and discussions focused on strategic development and cooperation opportunities. The delegation included key executives from the Japan External Trade Organization in Guangzhou, Mizuho Bank (China), Ltd. Guangzhou Branch, and KPMG Guangzhou, along with officials from Guangzhou's business and political sectors.
During their visit to HKUST(GZ), the delegation was welcomed and participated in a drone show at the university's Highbay, which highlighted the institution's commitment to innovation and technology. The delegation expressed appreciation for HKUST(GZ)'s innovative academic programs and interdisciplinary approach to education.
The discussions underscored the delegation's interest in fostering further exchanges and collaborations between Japan and HKUST(GZ). This visit serves as a foundation for future partnerships aimed at enhancing educational and economic connections between the two regions. HKUST(GZ) looks forward to exploring these opportunities for collaboration in the coming years.
