The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) Signs Student Exchange Agreement During Japan Visit

From March 18 to 19, 2025, a delegation from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), led by Professor Yang Yang, Associate Vice-President (Teaching & Learning), visited Japan. During the trip, they signed a student exchange agreement with Osaka University and engaged in in-depth discussions with Ritsumeikan University, reaching a broad consensus on future initiatives in academic collaboration and cultural exchange.

On March 19, the delegation held talks at Osaka University, where the Dean of the The School/ Graduate School of Engineering Science, Professor Shigeo Wada, officially signed the memorandum of understanding and the student exchange agreement with Professor Lei Chen, Dean of Information Hub, and Professor Shi-Wei Lee, Dean of Systems Hub of HKUST(GZ).

Signing agreements with Osaka University

Dr. Shuang Chen, Director General of Education Bureau of Guangzhou Municipality, witnessed the signing of the agreement. She expressed her hope that the partnership between HKUST(GZ) and Osaka University would serve as a catalyst for further collaboration in teaching, joint research and personnel exchanges. She also extended a warm invitation to Osaka University to visit Guangzhou.

The delegation included Professor Shugen Ma from the Systems Hub and the Global Affairs Department of HKUST(GZ).

The agreement with Osaka University represents a significant milestone in HKUST(GZ)’s efforts to enhance educational exchanges with Japanese higher education institutions, following President Lionel M. Ni’s delegation visit to Japan last June.

HKUST(GZ) is committed to cultivating outstanding talent with an international vision and global competence. Since last year, we have provided students with opportunities to participate in long- and short-term exchange programs at top universities such as Stanford University, the University of California, the National University of Singapore, RWTH Aachen University, KU Leuven, the University of Bologna, Osaka University, and Seoul National University. Students are encouraged to experience different academic environments and diverse cultures, thereby enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills and global views.

On March 18, the HKUST(GZ) delegation received a warm welcome from Professor Sachio Nakato, Vice President (International) of Ritsumeikan University, and the International Affairs Division. Professor Yang Yang presented an overview of the HKUST(GZ)’s academic structure and development vision, leading to vigorous discussions on interdisciplinary integration and educational innovation. Both universities expressed a keen desire to establish strong ties to promote collaborative research and student exchange programs.

Professor Shugen Ma, a Foreign Fellow of the Engineering Academy of Japan, and a Professor Emeritus of Ritsumeikan University, has had a strong background working at research institutions including Ritsumeikan University.
