HKUST(GZ)’s Prof. Fugee TSUNG Awarded Prestigious 2025 Shewhart Medal in International Quality Field

Recently, Professor Fugee TSUNG, Chair Professor jointly appointed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been honored with the 2025 Shewhart Medal by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The award citation lauds him for “pioneering advanced statistical process control, significantly improving industrial system quality, and demonstrating exceptional academic leadership and impactful mentorship.”

Prof. Fugee Tsung (left) received the 2025 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) – the Nobel Prize in the field of quality – at the ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement, held in the United States on May 4, 2025. 

The Shewhart Medal is considered the “Nobel Prize in the quality field,” awarded only to the world's top scholars. Prof. Tsung’s research not only advances theoretical frontiers but also elevates global production quality to new heights.

Established in 1948 and named after Walter A. Shewhart, the father of statistical quality control, celebrates individuals who have driven groundbreaking advancements in quality theory and practice. The Shewhart Medal has historically honored luminaries such as W. Edwards Deming, Kaoru Ishikawa, and Genichi Taguchi. The medal holds immense influence in the industry, inspiring numerous other awards named after its recipients, such as the Brumbaugh Award, Grant Award, Deming Award, Freund-Marquardt Award, Ishikawa Award, and Shainin Award.

Ranked among the top 2% of the world’s most influential scientists (Stanford-Elsevier Mendeley), Prof. Tsung bridges academic rigor and industrial application. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, American Society for Quality, and International Academy for Quality, among others, Prof. Tsung’s work has redefined quality control methodologies across industries worldwide. He currently serves as a Chair Professor in the Data Science and Analytics Thrust at HKUST(GZ) and the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics at HKUST. He leads the Industrial Informatics and Intelligence Institute at HKUST(GZ) and the Quality and Data Analytics Lab at HKUST, driving cutting-edge research in industrial AI and smart systems. His editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quality Technology (JQT) and prior roles as Head of HKUST’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics and Founding Acting Dean of the Information Hub at HKUST(GZ) further highlight his academic stewardship.
