President Ni Dialogued with U.S. Consul General in Guangzhou
On September 15, Professor Lionel Ni, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)), welcomed Ms. Pauline Kao, the Consul General of the United States of America in Guangzhou, for a courtesy visit.
Accompanied by Vice Consul Olivia Dowling and Counselor Alwyn Thomson, Ms. Kao engaged in discussions on HKUST(GZ)’s development, interdisciplinary education reforms, and global outreach strategies. President Ni highlighted the university’s recent partnerships with nine American universities, including Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania, reflecting a commitment to fostering international collaboration.

Professor Ye Qi, Dean of Society Hub, offered insights into the university’s innovative academic framework and the mission of the Society Hub.
Ms. Kao expressed her impression on the university’s modern campus and its unique educational philosophy, noting the initiatives HKUST(GZ) has undertaken to promote cultural exchanges between the U.S. and China. Both sides also explored topics such as the internationalization of research universities, innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems, and strategies for nurturing students’ creativity and critical thinking.
After the meeting, Mr. Jing Fu, the head of the Global Affairs Department, guided Ms. Kao and her team on a campus tour. The delegation also took part in an immersive experience at “SURREALITY,” an extended reality (XR) art exhibition hosted by the Center for Metaverse and Computational Creativity (MC²) at HKUST(GZ).
