Biography

Professor Quanke Su is currently the Chief Engineer and Professor of Practice at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Bridge Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, and a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Professor Su graduated from the School of Highway, Chang'an University in 1987 with a master's degree in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, and later joined the Guangdong Institute of Transport Research during which he participated in the design and research work and construction practice of many major projects. He was the Deputy Director of Guangdong Highway Engineering Quality Supervision Station and the Chief Engineer of Guangdong Institute of Transport Science.

Professor Su has over 30 years of practical experience in the field of transport infrastructure. Prior to the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), he was selected by the governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to be the Chief Engineer of the world-class cross-harbor project, the HZMB, which lasted for over 18 years from 2004 to 2022.

Professor Su has made long term exploration in promoting technological integration and collaborative innovation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and is the project leader of the Key Program supported by the National Eleventh Five-Year Plan Science and Technology Grant, and the 14th Five-Year Plan National Key Program for Research and Development. His main research areas include strategic planning and technical architecture for major engineering projects, structural and durability technologies for marine engineering, digitalization and intelligent construction, intelligent operation and maintenance technologies for transport infrastructure, as well as integrated transport and autonomous transport systems.

In terms of part-time social positions, Professor Su serves as a member of the National Expert Group on Medium and Long-term Science and Technology Development Planning for 2035, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway Joint Technology Tackling Expert Group, the Expert Group on Integrated Development of Transport and Energy, the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Transport, the Provincial-Ministry Joint Technical Expert Group for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage and the Dalian Bay Cross-Sea Passage, and the Deputy Director of the Expert Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Highway Society.

Professor Su was awarded the 2017 National Science and Technology Innovation People (also known as "Bridge Titan", total 10 awardees nationwide, jointly selected by eight institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Education). He also received the Outstanding Contribution Award (2 awardees worldwide) from the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) in 2018, the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Special Award (ranked No. 1) and the South Guangdong Model in 2019, the Government Special Allowance Expert issued by the State Council in 2020, the South Guangdong Innovation Award, the 6th National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent in 2021. In 2023, Professor Su was honored with the inaugural "National Engineering Award" and received the title of “National Outstanding Engineer”, which is the highest honor in the field of engineering and technology in China.
