A year ago, as the Red Bird first chirped, the torch was passed on, signifying the transmission of HKUST's spirit from Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong to Nansha, Guangzhou.

From stepping onto the campus, participating in the flag-raising ceremony to listening to the President's lecture for the first time, precious memories abound.

Day by day, with unwavering determination, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) passes on the can-do spirit to new generations.

Located in Nansha, Guangzhou, the geometric center of the Greater Bay Area, HKUST(GZ) is the first Mainland-Hong Kong jointly-organized university with independent legal personality established since the promulgation and implementation of the "Outline of the Plan for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" and the "Overall Plan for Deepening the World-Facing Cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in Nansha, Guangzhou". Guangzhou and Hong Kong have their own strengths in finance, science and technology, and both are core cities in the Greater Bay Area. HKUST(GZ) integrates the high-quality educational resources of the two places, explores the cutting-edge cross-disciplinary academic structure, and innovates the mode of talent cultivation, which is conducive to nurturing innovative talents with an international outlook, promoting the comprehensive reform of China's higher education, fostering the integration of the Mainland and Hong Kong and facilitating the construction of the Greater Bay Area. Uniting at HKUST(GZ)

On the evening of August 18, 2022, the last batch of more than 80 faculty members and students from Hong Kong completed their quarantine and made it to HKUST(GZ). President Lionel M. NI led our staff representatives to warmly welcome all colleagues and students. Under the night sky with lights around, the Red Bird witnessed the touching moment of reunion and first meeting of HKUST(GZ)'s students, faculty members and staff.

The First Chirp of the Red Bird

On September 1, 2022, the first opening ceremony of HKUST(GZ) was officially held. HKUST(GZ) is the first Mainland-Hong Kong collaborative university approved for establishment since the promulgation and implementation of the "Outline of the Plan for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area", and is the first major project to be inaugurated after the introduction of the "Overall Plan for Deepening the World-Facing Cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in Nansha, Guangzhou". The university is committed to becoming the first university to implement cross-disciplinary education and will explore ways to reform higher education in the world.

First Flag Raising Ceremony

On National Day, October 1, 2022, representatives of students, faculty members and staff in HKUST(GZ) participated in the flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 73rd Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China. This is the first time for HKUST(GZ) to hold a flag-raising ceremony on the National Day, which gave all students and faculty members unforgetable patriotic education and meanwhile ignited the patriotic fervor in their hearts.

The Library

On November 15, 2022, Library in HKUST(GZ) started trial operation. On the first day, 1,261 visitors came and 165 books were borrowed. Early in the morning, students came to take a first look. They said, "In the library, I feel that I have found the most suitable space for self-study", "I am very interested in the library's various collections and databases, and I hope that there will be more rich content helping us study". Everyone expressed their love and support for the library.

In the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility (MCPF) of HKUST(GZ), Professor Lutao WENG, Director of MCPF and a senior expert on materials science, was training the young technicians on the use of the most advanced Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer in China.

Metaverse vs. Military Training

How can we incorporate technological elements into traditional military training? Guided by this question, Professor Lei CHEN, Dean of Information Hub at HKUST(GZ), and the Information Technology Department of the Office of the President engaged in extensive discussions and refinement. Through collaborating with China Mobile and leveraging the resources of HKUST(GZ), they successfully established the Metaverse Joint Innovation Laboratory. As a result, a metaverse training course was introduced during the first-year military training. Within the metaverse, students had the opportunity to engage in activities such as firearm disassembly and assembly, shooting experiences, and tactical instructions through simulated revolutionary war scenarios. With the help of cutting-edge technology, students were able to immerse themselves in a highly interactive learning environment within the metaverse.

The President's First Lesson

On September 1, 2023, at the Opening Ceremony of HKUST(GZ), the Founding President, Professor Lionel M. NI, delivered the "President's First Lesson" to the students and faculty members under the title of "FIVE TIPS TO WIN IN THE AGE OF AI", encouraging them to reshape the "teaching" and "learning" of the university in the age of artificial intelligence. Professor Lionel M. NI encouraged everyone to think deeply, to change rapidly, to meet the challenges and to become the heroes that the world needs.
